Condition: 3 Titles, all First Editions, in 1 Volume. First Edition Scott, pp54 but bound without half-title : First Edition Heber, ppviii + 32 but bound without half-title : First Edition Gentleman's Magazine, frontispiece + 3 plates + pp192. Bound together in contemporary half calf, spine elegantly gilt and titled Poems &c, slight wear or rubbing to extremeties of binding, a little dried along hinges and head of upper joint cracking along 1 inch at the top section, else a very good mellow copy.

Scott was fascinated by Napoleon and later wrote a 7-volume biography of him. This famous poem resulted from Scott's trip to the site of Waterloo - in fact his very first trip abroad - a mere six weeks after the battle. The proceeds of the poem went to support the dependents of those who had been slaughtered there. 'Like many of his generation, he saw the Emperor's defeat by Wellington as the decisive moment of history. Vol 1 with Errata slip at rear, and with large facsimile (with complicated folding pattern) of Shelley's handwriting. Couple of minor scuffs to bindings, sides just slightly scuffed, blank prelims a little darkened or foxed. Neat repair from the reverse to small tear in facsimile. Overall an excellent bright attractive copy with fresh crisp text.

Condition: ** Includes some Inscribed Presentation Issues and some Signed Issues.** 53 [ex 56] Booklets contained in two custom-made folding boxes in striking Curwen-style patterned papers, and double tan morocco labels. The Booklets were originally issued stapled in variously coloured wrappers : the staples [which tended to rust] have been removed and neatly replaced with sewing. ** A fine collection, very handsomely presented, and all in excellent condition.

Sitwell had a total of 56 booklets printed privately at Brackley between 1972 and 1981. Most were Limited Editions of c.100 copies only, of which a few were issued numbered and signed [see Ritchie : Sitwell Bibliography A72 &c].
