One of only seven engravings from the extremely rare privately issued 1928 Aesop's Fables. Stanley Morison 'had asked David Jones to illustrate with copper engravings some of the Fables of Aesop for a type specimen of the New Hellenic Type (in Greek characters) designed by Scholderer for the Lanston Monotype Corp. This was privately issued in 1928 with seven copper engravings, and is now extremely rare. 150 copies were specified in the colophon; but in one extant copy Morison altered the number to 50, and in another to 30 ... Finally the copper plates were lost in the Blitz that destroyed both the Monotype offices and Morison's flat on the night of 10 May 1941' [Cleverdon].
