Rare : a piracy, but the first attempt at a Collected Edition. Ascham was 'the first to offer the London reader a nearly complete collection of Shelley's Poems. These volumes prove to be the most interesting of all the pirated editions'. Texts in general are taken from the original authorised editions & are therefore the 'most fully corrected of all the pirated texts'. The complex make-up of the book, deriving from Ascham's original part-issue plan [virtually no copies in parts are known], means that there are wide differences from copy to copy. This handsome set omits the 26pp Life, and the separate title & 6pp prelims to Posthumous Poems. All the other half-titles, separate title-pages, contents leaves &c &c are present. *** Includes the first published reproduction in England of the Curran portrait. See Taylor: Early Collected Editions.
