Signed H[?] Senhouse: & with elegant booklabel of Roger Senhouse. Roger Senhouse 1900 - 1970 was a wealthy bibliophile and translator. He co-founded Secker & Warburg, the influential publisher of many important writers including George Orwell and D. H. Lawrence, and was the first English translator of the works of Colette and de Beauvoir. He moved in the Bloomsbury set of Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, and in the mid-1920s began an intense love affair with the elderly Lytton Strachey. He may also have had an earlier relationship with Michael Llewelyn Davies, J. M. Barrie's foster son and a model for Peter Pan. *** Virgil's themes reworked in French. Delille 1738-1813 is best-known in England for his didactic landscape poem The Gardens. His French translation of Virgil's Georgics secured him the support of Voltaire. L'Homme Des Champs, a reworking of Virgil's themes [English translation 1803 The Rural Philosopher or French Georgics], was completed in Switzerland while in self-imposed exile from the Revolution : hence the imprint. Copies - or editions - with Strasburg and Berlin imprints were also issued : all are scarce. This Basle Edition not in NUC.
