Colburn 1843. First Illustrated Book Edition, original blue cloth pictorially gilt. Roy.8vo, c.pp236 uncut, spine just slightly sunned, vulnerable binding lightly bumped or marked here and there, but very good. Endpaper with ticket of original 19thC bookseller Weller of Croydon. With portrait by Maclise + etched title by Johannot + 14 engraved illustrations by Cruikshank + 4 by Johannot and + 87 woodcut illustrations by Delamotte. 
Rare in the original gilt-decorated cloth binding. Excellent copy in the original cloth binding, and with text and plates very clean & crisp. The first fully illustrated Book Edition : it is this 2nd Book Edition 'which is most sought after' [Locke]. Originally issued 1842-43 in Ainsworth's Magazine : followed by the 1st Book Edition issued in 3 vols but illustrated only with three Cruikshank frontispieces : followed by this 2nd Book Edition, fully illustrated as per the Ainsworth Magazine issue but with the addition of the portrait + etched title : followed by the Part Issue 1843-44 in 11 parts. Extremely popular novel about Henry VIII and his wives Catherine and Anne Boleyn. 'This novel represents the most extraordinary collaboration between author & illustrator in the Victorian period' : with 'very detailed & naturalistic' illustrations by Johannot : 'very fine' plates by Cruikshank, particularly the famous nocturnal designs : and 'numerous photographically accurate woodcuts' by Delamotte of Windsor Castle & grounds [see Sutherland : Victorian Fiction]. Detailed and authoritative history - with complete bibliography etc - of Jack Lindsay's prolific but short-lived idiosyncratic Australian private press, begun in Sydney in the 1920s and wound up in 1930 after a move to Britain. Includes reduced title-page facsimiles of all 46 Fanfrolico books : and also 45 illustrations, some full-page after Norman Lindsay, Edward Bawden, Hal Collins and Lionel Ellis.

With portrait plate of Bewick + 60 other Bewick illustrations in text. 
The first modern edition of Bewick's Memoir : 'There has been no reprint of the book since its first publication in 1862, and it has long been difficult to obtain a copy' [Selwyn Image : Introduction].

About 100 copies only. Designed by Herbert Spencer and printed by Lund Humphries. Both items based on a swirling Art Nouveau design by Henry van de Velde for the Continental Havana Compagnie. Fernand Baudin spoke on Henry van de Velde & Typography.

Exquisite views of buildings, townscapes and interiors from France, Italy & Spain in haunting, silvery engravings by Richard Wyndham. Brief introduction and commentary by Sacheverell Sitwell. A fine austere book, similar in style and feel to the same publisher's outstanding Sailing Ships & Barges Of The Western Mediterranean.

A 'prophetic retrospect', written in 1958 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of A Room With A View, in which Forster brings the lives of the characters from his famous novel up to date.

London, Country Book Club 1955. Green cloth with patterned green and white dustwrappers. 8vo [binding c.22 x 14 cms], pp287, backstrip slightly faded, dustwrappers slightly darkened along backstrip and just chipped at head and foot, else a very good copy. 
Illustrated with c.64 very attractive woodcut country scenes. *** A lyrical account of the English countryside and its wildlife around Epping Forest, Essex, during the period 1934 to 1948, by the Canadian-born naturalist H. W. Gillingham. The book was first published in 1953. *** This is the first of only a handful of books to be illustrated by Harry Pettit, wildlife artist, ecologist and associate of the naturalist Peter Scott. *** This copy with endpaper inscribed 'Chloris Hughes Stanton, 2 Cedar House, Marloes Rd W8'. She was the daughter of the artist Sir Herbert Hughes-Stanton, and sister of the artist and book illustrator Blair Hughes-Stanton. There is a portrait of her at her father's house in Cagnes, France, painted by William Russell Flint in 1926.

This copy with the Notice to Subscribers loosely enclosed as issued. *** The first book in Eric Gill's new Golden Cockerel type expressly designed for the use of the press. Vivien Gribble's first book illustrations. Very attractive and rather uncommon book. This copy with the neat typographical bookplate of Ruari McLean, typographer and historian of book design.

492 copies [& 5 specials] strikingly hand-printed in Verona on Fabriano hand-made paper in the original types used by Giambattista Bodoni at his Bodoni Press in 18th century Parma. Each poem with an opening initial in red. A beautiful example of restrained & elegant printing : very much in the manner of Mardersteig and his 20th century Officina Bodoni which, like Mondadori, was also based in Verona. In fact one of the first titles produced by Mardersteig after his move to Verona in 1927 was printed for the Edizioni Mondadori. Very handsome book.

The front and rear pages also elegantly printed in Zapf's Optima in red.

Scarce : This 1875 Edition is not noted by Lister : Palmer Catalogue Raisonne. In fact Lister states in the Catalogue Raisonne, published in 1988, that he had found no other edition between the 1866 Edition and the so-called 8th Edition of 1881. Includes the plate Sowing & Reaping after Samuel Palmer : and a portrait of Procter and 19 other full-page plates by Charles Keene, Tenniel, Du Maurier, Millais &c. Edited by Dickens who had published most of Procter's poems while he was editor of Household Words.
